The Core i5-3317U is a dual processor where each of the cores is clocked at the rate of 1.7 GHz, but because of Turbo Boost technology it can overclocked automatically up to 2.4 GHz when 2 core are activated and 2.6 GHz when only one of the cores is activated.
Some of the differences between the Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge processor is the improved die shrink and enhancement on both CPU and GPU side. Ivy Bridge processors are now produced at about 22 nanometer compared to Sandy Bridge’s 32 nanomter. It is also the first Intel technology that uses 3D transistors for improved energy efficiency in comparison to alike clocked Sandy Bridge processors.
Additional new features of the new Ivy Bridge processors (like Core i5-3317U ) are the integrated PCI Express 3.0 and DDR3(L)-1600 support. It also has Intel Smart Cache of about 3MB. Some more features include Turbo Boost 2.0, Hyper-Threading, Virtualization VT-x, AES, Intel 64, VT-d, Anti-Theft, My WiFi, Idle States, Enhanced SpeedStep, Thermal Monitorin, Execute Disable Bit and more.
The Core i5-3317U has an integrated graphics controller called Intel HD Graphics 4000 with 16 Execution Units (EUs) which clocked at 350 MHz up to 1.05 GHz because of Turbo Boost. This intel HD Graphics 4000 is more powerful compared to the older Intel HD graphics 3000 present in Sandy Bridge processors.
This Intel Core i5-3317U has a thermal design power (TDP) of about 17 Watts and therefore it is best suited for small laptops and ultrabooks. Lower TDP means it consumes less electricity therefore prolonging the battery life of the unit.
