HTML Forms

HTML forms is one method of getting information from your visitors. You may put a few boxes and buttons on your page where your visitors may enter their details and you may obtain them through email. Just like any other HTML tag, forms follow a structure. The <form> tag is a container tag. This means that anything in between the <form> and </form> tags is a part of a form element. Below is an example of HTML forms.

HTML - Inline Frames and Frame Related Attributes

The tag <iframe>, which means inline frame, creates a frame that is located inside the regular non-framed web page. <iframe> tag works like <img> tag, only instead of placing a picture on the page, it places another web page. Below is a code used for creating a webpage that contains an inline frame.

HTML - Frames in Rows

It is also possible to create frames in rows. Row frames are set up from top to bottom of the page. Below is the code used to create frames in rows.

Frames in Columns

Frames allow you to split the page into a number of rectangular regions and to display a separate document in each rectangle. Each of those rectangular regions is called frame. Frames are quite common because they are one of the few ways to keep part of the page stationary while other parts change. Frames are usually used to have a static navigation bar on one side of your webpage at all times. Below is an example of frame as displayed in Mozilla Firefox.

HTML- Modifying the Table Border, Alignment, Cellspacing and Cellpadding

As you have observed, the created table in the previous lesson has an invisible boundary. To make the boundary visible you can use the border attribute, there are other attributes used in modifying some properties of table and those will be discussed in this lesson.

October 22, 2011

HTML- Creating a Basic Table

As what has been said a while ago, tables are useful in presenting and structuring data. It allows the visitor to find the needed information quickly and easily. Below is an example of basic table.

HTML - Understanding Color

Like I said a while ago, you can modify the color of your webpage using HTML but the W3C recommends using CSS in doing this in HTML 4.01 and XHTML. The name of the color could be like "red", "green", "blue", “yellow”, “black”, “white” etc. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has listed 146 valid color names for HTML and CSS (another mechanism for adding style to web documents and stands for Cascading Style Sheet). This includes aqua, black, blue, fuchsia, gray, green, lime, maroon, navy, olive, purple, red, silver, teal, white, and yellow.

Creating an Image Map-HTML

You can add some interactivity to your image using the image maps. Using the image map you can define several clickable regions using only a single image. For you to identify the clickable region in a given image you should define the so called hotspots within the image. Therefore an image map is an image on a webpage that contains several hotspots.

Controlling the Vertical and Horizontal space using HTML

If some text wraps around an image, it may look like too close to the image. We can increase the vertical and horizontal space around the image using the vspace and hspace attribute of the <img> tag, see the next image.

Controlling the Alignment of a Given Image using HTML

Aside from resizing your image, you can also control the vertical and horizontal alignment of your image with respect to the text using the align attribute. To demonstrate this property, open your text editor and type the next code:

Resizing an Image Using HTML

You can also modify the size of your image using the width and height attribute. Open your text editor now and key in the code:

Using Image as a Link

You can make your favorite image as a link too by placing the <img> tag in between the <a> and </a> tags so that the image is in place of the text you would usually have. So, to create a link using pix.jpg that will lead to header.html, you would write the following code

Inserting an Image

When inserting images in a webpage, they have to be in a particular format. Images in Windows Bitmap file format (BMP) or Macintosh Picture File (PICT) may not be rendered or displayed by the browsers. For that reason, graphics must be in a specific format so that browser can understand and display it in your webpage. The most commonly used image file formats in designing webpages and understood by the browsers are the GIF (Graphics Interchange Format), PNG (Portable Network Graphics) and JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group).

Linking to Another Page Anywhere in the World and Linking to Email Address

Linking to Another Page Anywhere in the World

Just like linking the page within a website there is no need to insert pound sign (#) before the file’s path when linking to a page anywhere in the world. Instead just place the full URL of the webpage as the value of the hypertext reference (href). See sample code below.

Linking to another Page within your Website

To link to another page within your website, there’s no need to insert the pound sign (#) before the file’s path, instead just place the filename and the appropriate file extension as the value of the hypertext reference (href). This method is applicable only if both webpages, the current page and the file to be linked to, is within the same folder. As shown in the right.

Hyperlink

A hyperlink or link is a text, group of text, or image that you can click on to go to a new page or a new section within the current page. If you are going to move your pointer over a link in a webpage, the arrow will turn into a little hand.

Understanding URL

You need to understand first what URL is before you can create a link. URL stands for uniform resource locator. It has several parts: the protocol; the domain name; the directory or folder; and the filename and its extension. Below is an example of URL and the corresponding parts.

Definition List

The third type of list is the definition list. It is useful for information that comes in pairs. A definition list starts with the <dl> tag. Each term in the definition list is listed with the <dt> tag. The description for the term is listed with the <dd> tag.  Launch your text editor now and type the next code.

Creating Nested List

It is possible to create a list inside another list. This type of list is called as nested list. A nested list can be used to create an outline. The next figure is an example code of nested list.

Ordered List

Ordered List is also called numbered list. This type of list can be used when the order of items to list is significant. It could be used if you want to list the steps in cooking or preparing a recipe, with ordered list each list items are emphasized in order; alphabetically or numerically. An ordered list can be made with different styles; Arabic numbers (1, 2, 3, …), lowercase or uppercase letters (A, B, C…), or lowercase or uppercase Roman numerals (I, II, III, …). The following code shows examples for each of these types: (You may type the code on your text editor to see it yourself.)

Unordered List

Lists are often used to present information in an easy to read approach. List allows you to make your key points stand out from the rest of the text; it is also used to indent information. List can be numbered, bulleted or printed without numbers and bullets.

Blockquote Tags

The <blockquote> tag defines a long quotation. Blockquote tags (<blockquote>, </blockquote>) are used to set off a section or block of text from the surrounding text meaning to say browser inserts white space before and after a blockquote element. Blockquote is often rendered with indented margins. Open your favorite text editor again and key in the code below.

Non-breaking space, &nbsp;

&nbsp; stands for non-breaking space character or simply known as space character. It should be typed in lower case letters. Just like the angle brackets (<, >), browsers also read commands between ampersand “&” and “;”. Let us see the effect of non-breaking space tag on your webpage by typing in the code below on your text editor.

Text Formatting

In the previous lesson, you have written a short code to show that you can write HTML. It feels good, right? But I know you still want to improve the look and feel of your webpage. You want some text to be noticeable, want to bold some text and use italics. Below is the list of tags used in formatting text.

The Header Tags

Header tags are used in HTML documents to display headings. It makes your heading larger or smaller and makes the heading bold. You use big headings for the main points in a webpage and small headings for the sub points. There are six header tags: <h1>, <h2>, <h3>, <h4>, <h5> and <h6>. Each header tag indicates the relative importance of each section it is heading.

Preformatted Text Tag, <pre></pre>

Preformatted text tag marks the text as "preformatted". All the spaces and returns are rendered exactly as you type them. Preformatted text is displayed in a fixed width font, meaning to say, all characters and spaces are the same width. Open your text editor now and key in the next code to see the effect of </pre> tag in action.

Horizontal Rule Tag, <hr />

HR stands for horizontal rule. It is used to draw a horizontal line (a "horizontal rule") across the page. To see its property in action, key in the code given below on your text editor.

Paragraph Tag, <p></p>

Paragraph tag is consists of opening tag and closing tag. It tells the browser to insert a blank or empty line and then begin a new line or a new paragraph. One of the attribute of paragraph tag is the align attribute — it indicates the alignment of the paragraph: left (the default alignment), center, right and justify. To see its property in action, key in the code given below on your text editor.

Line Break Tag, <br />

Line Break Tag, <br />

This tag is called as line break. It tells the browser when a line has ended and to start on the next line. Key in the code below on your favorite text editor to see the effect of <br> tag in action.

Basics of HTML

Basic Webpage Format

Tags describe the meaning of the text they contain, some of them are <html>, <head>, <body>, <p>, <title> and more.  To tell the browser that something is a tag, simply place the less than (<) and greater than (>) symbol around them. Those symbols are also called angle brackets. Therefore, if you will enclose the word head in between the opening angle bracket “<” and closing angle bracket “>”, you are telling the browser that the word head is a tag.

Things Needed in Designing your Webpage

Before working with your very first webpage, let us discuss first the things needed in creating it and how to give your webpage a name.

In creating a webpage, you will need a directory or folder, a web browser and a word processor.

History of HTML

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It is one of the languages used to create web pages and a means of interconnecting web pages together. A webpage is viewed in a web browser like Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera and many more.

Resistors in PARALLEL Configuration

When loads are connected across each other or side by side, so that there is more than one path for the flow of electric current, the resistors are said to be parallel connected. The more the loads are connected in parallel, the lesser the opposition there is to the flow of electric current. The effective resistance is smaller than the smallest resistance value in a circuit.

October 5, 2011

Resistors in SERIES configuration

When resistors are connected end-to-end so that there is only one path for the flow of electric current, the resistors are said to be series connected.

The effective resistance of a series circuit depends on the number and the value of resistors connected in the circuit. The more resistors connected in series, the higher the effective resistance of the circuit. The higher the resistance of the circuit the more the opposition there is to the flow of electric current.
Below are the rules to be followed in computing the unknown quantities in series circuit.

Electric Power

When a force causes motion work is done. When one exerts effort to push an object and when such effort causes the object to move forward, work is done. If such an effort did not cause the object to move, such force does not cause work.

Ohm’s Law

We all know that electrons flow through the circuit because of the electromotive force or voltage. Great amount of voltage applied in the circuit will cause more electrons to move from one point to another, or the greater the intensity of the current flowing in the circuit. Connecting resistor with high amount of resistance in the circuit will decrease the intensity of current flow. This relationship between voltage, current and resistance is stated in Ohm’s law.

Identifying the electrodes and type of bipolar transistor.

Note: Range x1 or x10 is used in illustrations A to F.
  1. Connect the test probes to the terminal of the transistor.Observe that the pointer needle did not deflect. Then reverse the connection as shown on illustration B.
  2. In this illustration, the pointer needle deflects to the right. In this case, we can say that the first or the second terminal is the base.

Testing Diodes with an Ohmmeter

Just like any other electronic component, one of the methods used to identify whether a diode is defective is with the use of your senses. Some indications of a damaged diode are: crack on its body, a sign of burn or burnt smell coming from diode. If there are no physical signs that a diode is defective, you may use an ohmmeter to test its condition. Below are steps to be followed in testing diodes with an ohmmeter.

October 1, 2011

Identifying the Anode and the Cathode of Diode with an Ohmmeter

Before attempting to test a good or defective diode, one very important thing to consider is its terminals or electrodes. These electrodes are anode (A), positive current-carrier and cathode (K), negative current-carrier. Following are some points to consider in determining the electrodes of a diode.

Testing Capacitors with an Ohmmeter (Analog Multitester)

A capacitor may develop troubles like open, shorted and weak or leaky. Following are rules to be followed in testing capacitors:
  1. Switch off the power supply.
  2. To be safe and to protect your ohmmeter from damage, discharge the capacitor before testing. Do this by short-circuiting its two terminals with a conductor. Make sure that the conductor that you are using has an insulated handle to protect you from electric shock.

Field Effect Transistor (FET)

Field effect transistor is also called as unipolar transistor. FET uses either electrons, in N-channel FET, or holes in P-channel FET for conduction. Field effect transistor has four main electrodes: source, gate, drain and substrate. In general, the body of the FET is connected to the source inside the package.
